A neck abscess is a collection of pus produced by a bacterial infection. This often results from an untreated throat or tooth infection. Infection spreads to lymph nodes in the neck, and pus develops as the infection grows.
A neck abscess appears as a painful mass in the tissues of the neck. Skin may be red and tender to the touch. Treatment for an abscess is an incision and drainage, performed in the operating room under general anesthesia.
