TRACHEOTOMY SCAR REVISION

A tracheotomy scar revision is performed to remove an unsightly scar.

A tracheotomy scar is formed after a tracheotomy tube is removed. Some scars heal very well and are unable to be seen. Other scars may be large and tether the skin to the deeper throat muscles making swallowing and speaking difficult.

A tracheotomy scar revision is performed under local anesthesia. The old scar is removed and the remaining skin is sutured together. This is done with a plastics closure using fine instruments and small needles.

When a tracheotomy scar involves the airway and trachea it is performed in the operating room. Sometimes muscles are used to bolster a closure.
